As the name implies, the piano hinge`s origins
can be traced back to the use of a continuous hinge to attach an effective
lid for the instrument`s keyboard. The rise in th popularity of the piano
throught the reign of Queen Victoria, coincided with the rapid growth of
industrial Britain producing an increase in individual income and a fall
in the price of manufactured goods. |

The pioneering inventors and engineers of the
19th century quickly recognised the scope and versatility of these hinges. |

A wide range of applications for piano type continuous
hinges rapidly developed, ranging from the leviathans of the steam age to
tiny musical boxes, mill machinery to spectacal cases. Throught the 20th
century with the dawning of a more technological age, increasingly sophisticated
variations of the traditional piano hinge were required to meet the needs
of the automotive aerospace and other 'high-tec' industries. Today the descendants
of the piano hinge can be found as far apart as the domestic kitchen and
deep space as well as almost everywhere in between. |
