Standard Continuous Hinges

  Hinge Length
Our standard continuous hinges are detailed from page 16 to page 52 and are designed and manufactured to set lengths, usually 1830mm.
As supplied, the hinge will have a `free working action` in the hand, and an amount of longitudinal and lateral play (dictated by material and tooling tolerances). The hinge pin will be held tight within the knuckles.

Modification to the set length of a hinge by th ecustomer after delivery (receipt) may have several affects.

  • The hinge pin may become loose and fall out of knuckles
  • There will be more noticeable longitudinal play (along the hinge length).
  • There will be more noticible lateral play (across the hinge width)
  • The hinge action will generally become looser.

However hinges can be manufactured to special lengths eliminating the above problems, please see the special hinge section in the data sheets.

It is recommended that if the hinge is cropped or cut to a non-standard length, it should have a minimum of three knuckles.

When knuckles are cropped the hinge pin tends to become captive locally to the the ends due to the cut edge deforming the hinge knuckle and pin. Ideally the hinge should consist of an odd number of knuckles so that both end knuckles are on the same hinge flap which avoids the hinge pin acting as a torsion bar and resisting efficient operation.
